Prof. Elias Mossialos
Cheng Yu Tung Chair in Global Health
The London School of Economics and Political Science
Elias Mossialos is the Cheng Yu Tung Chair in Global Health and Director of LSE Health at the London School of Economics and Political Science. His research spans health systems and policy, with particular focus on healthcare financing, regulation, access, quality, pharmaceutical policy, cancer care, digital health, and antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
Among his policy innovations is the Options Market for Antibiotics, a mechanism inspired by financial call options that enables early-stage investment in antibiotics by offering payers the right to purchase them at reduced prices upon market approval. He has also developed a securitisation mechanism to fund long-term performance-based annuities for cell and gene therapies targeting rare (orphan) diseases.
Professor Mossialos has received multiple prestigious awards, including the Andrija Stampar Medal (2010) for his contributions to European public health, the ACRL Choice Award for Outstanding Academic Title (2021), two Baxter Awards from the European Health Management Association (2002, 2007), and the 2022 Helen-Clark-JoPPP Award for Pharmaceutical Policy and Practice Research. Under his leadership, LSE Health received the UK’s Queen's Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education in 2009.
He has held senior public roles, including Member of Parliament in Greece (2009–2012), Minister of State (2011), and Chair of the Parliament’s Special Committee on Monitoring the Social Security System. From 2020 to 2021, he served as Scientific Director of the Pan-European Commission on Health and Sustainable Development, convened by the WHO Regional Office for Europe and chaired by former Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti, to reframe health policy priorities in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
