Dr. Jean Kaseya is a distinguished global health leader with over 25 years of experience in public health, epidemiology, and health security. Since his appointment as Director General of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) in February 2023, he has been at the forefront of strengthening Africa’s health security architecture, advancing pandemic preparedness, and driving the continent’s self-reliance in healthcare.
Under his leadership, Africa CDC has championed regional manufacturing of medical countermeasures, expanded emergency response capabilities, and promoting mobilization of domestic resources for sustainable health financing. His decisive action during the Mpox outbreak, including its declaration as a Public Health Emergency of Continental Security (PHECS) and the establishment of an integrated continental Incident Management Support Team (IMST), has enhanced Africa’s outbreak preparedness and response mechanisms.
Before leading Africa CDC, Dr. Kaseya held senior roles in major global health organizations, including UNICEF, WHO, Gavi, and CHAI, where he played a pivotal role in shaping immunization policies and strengthening health systems across Africa.
Dr. Kaseya’s contributions have earned him multiple honors, including recognition by African Heads of State at the 2025 African Union Assembly for his transformative leadership in health security. A sought-after speaker and advocate for equitable healthcare, he continues to position Africa CDC as a key driver of global health resilience.
Fluent in multiple languages, he holds a medical degree and advanced qualifications in public health.
